Protection for dogs and cats in Corfu
The Lefkimi animal shelter is located in the south of Corfu and is divided into large open-air areas. As a rule, between 80 and 100 dogs and many cats live there, waiting for a new home. The club has already improved a lot in recent years. For example, a quarantine station and a medicine room were built to be able to carry out on-site operations, new enclosures were built, dog houses built as shady places and the water supply optimized.
The team not only rescue the young, beautiful, healthy cats and dogs, but also dogs that have spent their lives on chains, disused hunting dogs that have been kept in the worst conditions or that have simply been left to their own devices after an accident. We give all these dogs the chance of a second, dignified life.
The TAO Foundation supports the animal welfare association in Corfu financially in order to give the dogs the chance to receive care, medical care and a protected habitat.

Uta Engelhardt, chairwoman of Tierhilfe Corfu, reports how it all began almost 20 years ago:
“My family and I have been vacationing in Corfu for many years. We like the island, its inhabitants and the originality. Nevertheless, we could not close our eyes to chained dogs without water, to cats that have been pelted with stones. Dogs and cats which were kicked. Injured dogs and cats that were left to their fate. We helped wherever we could. We fed, provided water and also took one or the other animal with us to Germany every year. This animal always had his history and we couldn’t leave it to its fate. Nevertheless, our house was soon full. On vacation in Corfu I visited the animal shelters in Lefkimi and Acharavi. I was sad about these many young, nice dogs that had no chance of being placed in the animal shelter So I decided to do something and started working with Marjorie, the founder of the animal shelter in Lefkimi, and laid the foundation for it the foundation of Tierhilfe Korfu e.V. Since then, many dogs and cats have been able to start into a better future and have found loving families. But above all, the help on site and the improvement of the living conditions of the many animals, e.g. through castration, is a matter close to our hearts. It would be a dream if our help is no longer needed at some point, but unfortunately we are still a long way from achieving this goal. ”
