TU Berlin – Energieseminar e.V. – Sustainable water supply on Tempelhofer Feld

The Allmende-Kontor community garden on Tempelhofer Feld comprises over 250 raised beds and is tended by more than 500 gardeners.

In the summer of 2023, the garden was threatened with closure: the water supply was discontinued due to new fire safety regulations, and switching to cost-intensive drinking water would not have been financially or ecologically viable.
On the initiative of the Allmende-Kontor e.V. association, the Energy Seminar at TU Berlin – a student-organized initiative for energy, environmental and social issues that has existed for over 30 years – developed an innovative solution: existing infiltration shafts at the former airport were converted into rainwater cisterns equipped with solar-powered pumps. This means that the garden can now be watered sustainably and independently. Together with other foundations, we were able to make the project possible.
